Telecommunications - About Us

York University Telecommunications is responsible for all aspects of design, operation and maintenance of the telephone system that supports communication services at both York and Glendon campuses. This mandate includes switchboard, voicemail, emergency and elevator phones, residential service, pay phones, long distance and fax service.

Telecommunications also provides the facilities that support security surveillance cameras, building monitoring systems and residential entry systems.

York Telecom sets the communications standards for wiring, communication closets, risers, etc. in all York buildings. It is required that York departments consult with Telecommunications about required changes to the infrastructure of the University's telephone system and cable plant. Consultation is also necessary prior to installation of intercom systems, telephone answering devices, and paging and radio equipment.

To prepare for the timely development of effective communications strategies, York University Telecommunications also evaluates emerging trends in technologies related to voice, data, video, radio, paging and imaging.
